A trench next to a house is dug carefully — power or water is often already down there, and a finished path runs above it. Pipes go in at the required fall, connect to the existing chamber, and the trench is backfilled and compacted in layers.
Afterwards the ground is returned to its original state, including relaying any paving that had to be lifted.
